Experience and Qualifications

Our Principal, Edward, not only has a plethora of knowledge from extensive experience in many aspects of financial planning, he also has amongst the widest of professional qualifications and is a Chartered Financial Planner, the Gold Standard in financial and investment planning in the UK today.

These also include those from the Personal Finance Society, part of the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), such as the Pension Transfer Specialist (PTS) qualification G60, residential mortgages certification (CeMAP from the Institute of Financial Services), and advanced diploma level financial planning qualifications.

All of our Advisers are required to be a minimum of Level 4 Qualified.

Our Story

Following 21 years as an Independent Financial Adviser, Edward successfully sold his first financial advisory business in 2005. Subsequently, Edward established a private, closed-ended, geared property investment fund, which was closely related to pension fund investment strategies and represented an interesting diversification in the financial sector.

In a UK industry being rocked by commission scandals around 2011, Edward realised the importance of taking a fresh approach to the sector. It was a keen focus on employee benefits, private client wealth management and establishing a fee-based, commission-free business, with 100% transparency, that gave Patterson-Mills a sharp competitive edge over its competition.

During early 2011, Patterson-Mills Financial Planning was born.

The vision of a smaller IFA practice being ideally placed to offer true wealth management and holistic financial planning was the driving force for the Patterson-Mills business plan. This strategy benefitted clients extremely well, with lower costs, transparent dealings and added value services becoming possible.

In mid-2012, Edward became one of the earliest Chartered Financial Planners in the UK, a new (at the time) and higher qualification offered by the Chartered Insurance Institute and Personal Finance Society (CII-PFS) that was to become the gold standard qualification with international recognition.

With over 39 years in the financial services industry, Edward uses his knowledge, experience and strong desire to continue to make Patterson-Mills Financial Planning one of the most client-friendly firms in its field. Our whole business model has the client at its centre and with the use of the latest technology, our service offering is, we believe, second to none.

Continuing the Legacy

Throughout his University degree, starting in 2016, Edward’s son, Charles Mills, joined Patterson-Mills part-time where his natural capability with the IT side of life meant that managing our IT operations was a natural fit. Charles brought a keen focus on the benefits of using technology efficiently and effectively, to the great benefit of assisting with growing the business and to the enhanced convenience of our existing and future clients.

Charles had, and retains, a great passion for genuinely helping people succeed in the often complex realm of financial services. Jargon-free, ease of use and accessibility became key to Charles’ approach and, after graduating University in 2020, Charles worked towards and attained the CII Level 4 Diploma to become a valuable permanent member of our team.

Charles ensures that our high levels of service in wealth management and employee benefits services will continue long into the future.
